Oh, my, it's Peg! She's a Scottish Fisher girl who follows the herring (and the fishermen who catch them) up and down the east cost of England to the fishing towns, where she packs and pickles the slippery little things into great barrels, where they're sent off to Poland and Russia and other far away places. When the herring season is done, she goes back home to Scotland and the next year, she starts her journey again.
It's a hard, hard, dirty job, where she stands outside in all weather, so she keeps her work shawl on and, of course, a pinny, because who wants herring bits on your clothes? She's holding her gutting knife and a fish and next to her you'll see her knitting. The herring girls all knit, don't you know, and if there is any down time, they'll knit and talk and laugh up a great storm. They can knit and walk and talk at the same time!
Peg is hand painted on a real egg and each one is a little bit different. This item qualifies for FREE shipping to any UK location.
Peg, The Scottish Fisher Girl Egg
Each Scottish Fisher Girl is hand-painted in Suffolk on a blown, free-range hen's egg. The eggs are extra large. There does seem to be some natural variation, but the hens assure me they certainly FELT extra-large! Our Fisher Girls are fully recycleable and she is not a toy.
